Outcome ACPS 2008 – 12th Australian Coal Preparation Conference
October 19 – 23, 2008, Sidney, Australia

"Cleaning Coal to Secure Our Future" was the theme of the ACPS 2008 in Sidney which is considered to be the biggest and best ACPS conference yet. BOKELA participated in this event with a booth on the conference exhibition and presented two papers in the conference programme:

  • Modern Coal Dewatering With New High Performance Disc Filters

  • Improved  Filtration of Coal Slurries by Using Fundamental Knowledge to Revamp Disc Filters

Antecedent to the ACPS 2008, BOKELA had organised the 2nd coal filtration seminar " Rotary Disc Filters in Coal Washeries  – operation, design & process results " which could take up the big success of the previous seminar course in 2007.

Outcome AQW 2008 – 8th International Alumina Quality Workshop
September 7 – 12, 2008, Darwin Convention Centre, Northern Territory, Australia

“Alumina for the 21st Century” was the theme of the AQW 2008. BOKELA was again Foundation Sponsor of this outstanding event which is an excellent forum allowing experts of the Alumina refineries and their main suppliers a free exchange of information, experience and new technologies.

On the workshop program BOKELA reported on following topics:

  • “Advanced Pregnant Liquor Purification with a New Backflush Filter”

  • “Filtration of Bauxite after Pipeline Transport: Big challenges - proper solutions”

  • “Improved filtration and washing of Al-Hydrate product: cost savings by modern filter design”

Antecedent to the AQW 2008, BOKELA had organised the 2nd International BOKELA Filtration Meeting “Filtration in Alumina Refineries”  which was well visited and excellently received by experts of the alumina industry. The programme was focused on the filtration of coarse and fine seed, alumina product, pregnant liquor, red mud and oxalate using disc, drum, pan and polishing filters.

Vacuum Drum Filters for Filtration  & Washing of a Silicon Product

BOKELA has been awarded an order from a German producer of a silicon product to supply 4 vacuum drum filters of high performance design for the chemical industry. Each filter has a filter area of 5 m˛ and is equipped with exchangeable filter cells and cake wash device. The nominal solids throughput of 180 kg/h can increase to nearly 300 kg/h. The filters are characterized by high specific capacity, flexible operation and low maintenance due to their modern design. The new BOKELA drum filters will replace 4 drum filters of old design with a total filter area of 32 m˛.

Pilot Drum Filter for Brine Leaching Process

A major German salt producer has selected BOKELA to supply 1 pilot vacuum drum filter of high performance design. The filter was delivered to its destination at the beginning of December. The 1 m˛ filter will separate crystals from a new brine cooling process of pilot scale which will be operated for testing the feasibility of the new process. Main parts of the filter like trough, control head, filtrate pipes and receiver are isolated to prevent formation of condensate/ice.

Two Boozer Disc Filters started Operation

Two Boozer disc filters L4 (176 m˛ filter area each) started operation of fine seed filtration in an Australian Alumina Refinery. These 5th generation Boozer disc filters represent the most modern high performance disc filter design and were ordered by the client to replace drum filters of old design and to make the refinery fit for an plant upgrade. The two Boozers were commissioned by BOKELA engineers and started operation successfully.

Vacuum Drum Filters for Filtration  & Washing of Gypsum

A German producer of chemical products has selected BOKELA to supply 2 chemical vacuum drum filters of high performance design for separating precipitated gypsum from the valuable filtrate. A filter cake wash improves both filtrate recovery and purity of the gypsum which is used for medical purposes. The new drum filters of 2 m˛ each are equipped with exchangeable filter cells, cake wash device and hood with inspection window. The filters will replace a belt filter and have been chosen by the client to improve solids capacity, cake wash, moisture content and to reduce maintenance, repair and operation cost.

Upgrading of Kaolin Drum Filters

An American kaolin producer is upgrading its vacuum drum filters in order to improve the filter capacity. A first study showed that an increase by at least 45% can be reached for the main kaolin grades. The throughput increase of the fine grades will be 30%.

This way, it will be possible to shut off a lot of filters (more than 30 filters are installed) and make savings on the operating costs. Alternatively, the plant capacity can be increased without purchasing new filters, making thus savings on investments for filters, new buildings and ancillary equipment.
