Hi-Bar Filtration

... it's more than Filtration

Hi-Bar Filtration is an innovative and continuously working pressure filtration process developed by BOKELA. It is designed for pressure differences up to Dp = 6 bar and stands out by:

  • extremely high throughput rates

  • lowest residual moisture content

  • excellent cake washing

  • improved filtrate clarity

  • gentle product handling

Hi-Bar Filtration offers two process options:

  • compressed gas filtration with air or gas

  • steam pressure filtration with pure steam for cake washing and dewatering

For pilot tests and scale-up trials BOKELA has available a mobile pilot plant.

Plant Design

The plant design of the Hi-Bar Filtration is based on well approved and tough components such as disc or drum filters, which are installed inside a pressure vessel filled with compressed air. The filter cake is discharged out of the vessel by a sluice.

Both process versions of Hi-Bar Filtration are characterised by following features:

  • continuous pressure filtration process with disc or drum filters

  • horizontal pressure vessel for large units (man-sized) with manhole for maintenance work

  • vertical pressure vessel for small filter units (Oyster filter)

  • cake discharge from the filter cloth by blowing back of compressed air which also serves as air supply for the filtration process

  • hermetically sealed process

  • fully automatic operation

For Hi-Bar Filtration, the innovative high performance BOKELA disc and drum filter types are adapted for pressure filtration tasks.

  • With disc filters, Hi-Bar Filtration is available in sizes of 3.75 to 11.25 mē for the Oyster Filter and up to 120 mē filter area for the horizontal filters

  • The Hi-Bar drum filter is a unique wash filter which is available with 0.6 to 30 mē filter area (up to 6 mē for the Oyster Filter). This filter stands out by a lot of innovations like
    - individually fitted and exchangeable filter cells
    - special design features for separating of an undiluted mother liquor and a pure wash filtrate without entrainment of mother liquor

Hi-Bar Compressed Air Filtration

This process option of Hi-Bar Filtration uses the compressed air/gas inside the vessel for the pressure regulation, the cake forming, the cake washing (if required) and the cake dewatering.

Hi-Bar Steam Pressure Filtration

The patented Hi-Bar steam pressure filtration is the most advanced process of continuous pressure filtration and combines the physics of a mechanical dewatering with a thermal drying process.

Superheated steam is used for cake washing and cake dewatering. Thereby, the phenomenon of the "condensate-front" provides with very dry filter cakes and high effective cake washing. The "condensate-front" which moves through the filter cake in a piston-like flow effects both a mechanical and a thermal removal of filtrate from the filter cake. This leads to a high efficient use of energy or steam, respectively.

The modern and innovative steam pressure filtration process stands out by:

  • unique energy efficiency: with 1 kg steam up to 2 kg water can additionally be removed from the filter cake

  • extremely low moistures

  • high effective cake washing

  • reduced gas throughput

  • extraction of solid contents

  • diminishing of crack building in the cake

A steam cabin partially covers the filter area of the disc or drum filter and forms a separated room of pure steam atmosphere inside the vessel. Generally, the steam cabin covers the cake up to the point of steam-breakthrough and the cake is dried to its final moisture content by a subsequent stream of compressed air.

Hi-Bar Filtration Pilot Plant

The mobile Hi-Bar pilot plant consists of

  • a disc filter with 3.75 mē filter area
    or

  • a drum filter with
    0.6 mē filter area

which is installed inside a pressure vessel (maximum overpressure
6 bar) with a discharge sluice. The plant is designed both for compressed air and steam pressure filtration and is equipped with all necessary peripheral equipment such as filtrate receiver, compressors, pumps etc.

The mobile pilot plant is enclosed in two standard shipping containers and can be transported all around the world for pilot tests and scale-up trials.
