Fine Coal Filtration

Capacity increase with BOKELA disc filters at Goonyella

In 2017 BMA engaged Ausenco QCC to provide design services for replacing three aged Denver disc filters at the Goonyella Coal Preparation Plant in Queensland, Australia with new Bokela BoVac Disc filters.

A main challenge of this project was to reduce the risk of moving major pieces of equipment into and out of the process plant building. There was a key focus on reducing disruptions to production.

Outcomes and achievements of the project are

  • The 3 new filters were successfully integrated into normal operation of the washplant.
  • Fine coal filtration circuit was debottlenecked, with increased capacity
  • The new design allowed one disc filter to be shut down for routine maintenance while maintaining production.

Greg Lees, Principal Process Engineer of Ausenco QCC in Brisbane, reported at the 18th Australian Coal Preparation Society  Conference on 12th March 2021 about this project which he names as his most notable project throughout his 25 years of experience in the coal and mining industry.
